Need a better way to interest kids in their vegetables? How about turning lunch into high art. Since 2004, Mira Miyazawa has been doing just that. She’s one of Japan’s most recognized lunchbox artists, host of the popular site ‘e-obento’ and author of three cookbooks.
Like so many stay-at-home moms, Miyazawa began making bento boxes to save money – but the former computer graphics artist soon found herself pouring her love and talents into a totally new art form.
The trend has taken Japan by storm and moms are now showcasing their talents in preschool cafeterias around the country. There are online exhibitions and blogs entirely devoted to sharing tips and tricks on how to turn a whimsical imagination into edible creations.
The boxed lunch has never looked so appetizing! Check out more of Miyazawa’s masterful works on her site, www.e-obento.com.

Thank you so much for bringing this wonderful approach to culinary art to our attention. We’re so removed from Asian cuisine that we miss these great creations. I’ll certainly try it and see if I can get my daughter to eat more broccoli. I love your site.
These are so great! I hope I can be such a creative mom some day.
