Our series continues and goes international this week with a brilliantly talented artist from Curitiba, Brazil. Priscila is a sculptor whose work has earned her great recognition. As a proud mother, her creative talent has also passed to her daughter, one of São Paulo’s young up-and-coming film directors, Virginia de Ferrante.

What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?

Qual é a parte mais gratificante de ser mãe? A filha. My child.

What is the hardest part of being a mom?

Qual é a parte mais difícil de ser mãe? A responsabilidade única e vitalícia. The sole and lifelong responsibility.

What values did your parents instill in you that you would most like to pass on?

Quais são os valores que seus pais incutiram em você que você mais gostaria de passar adiante? Vida com espiritualidade. Life with spirituality.

What do you remember most about your mother or grandmother?

O que você se lembra mais sobre sua mãe ou sua avó? Minha mãe – lembro que ela sempre estava disponível para me ouvir, sempre estava ao meu lado. Minhas avós – uma super ativa e quase sempre fora de casa trabalhando, foi comerciante por muitos anos. A outra super caseira, dedicada a família, filhos, marido, netos. Generosa. Cozinhava super bem. Saudade de todas elas. My mother, I remember that she was always available to listen to me and she was always by my side. My grandmothers, one was super active and the other was almost always gone from home. The one who was away worked hard since she was a merchant for many years. The other, loved to be at home and was devoted to her family, children, husband and grandchildren. She cooked extremely well. I miss all of them.

When did you first consider yourself grown up?

Quando você começou a se considerar crescida? Na pré adolescência por volta dos 12 anos começaram as mudanças. I felt I was grown up early in my teen years, when I was 12 and the changes started.

How do you stay true to yourself as a woman?

Como você se mantém fiel a si mesma como uma mulher? Indo atrás das coisas que eu sei que fazem parte da minha personalidade e que me trazem satisfação. Que me levam a participar do mundo. Going after things that I know match my personality and bring me a lot of satisfaction. Things that lead me to feel part of the world.

How do you juggle work and motherhood?

Como você equilibrar o trabalho e a maternidade? Eu sempre tive uma boa retaguarda, minha mãe sempre presente, pai da minha filha que trabalhava  meio período fora de casa e babá. Estou falando no período em que minha filha era pequena. I always had a lot of support. My mother who was present, the daughter’s father who worked part time, and a baby sitter. But I’m referring to the time my daughter was little.

How do you destress and relax?

Como você destressa e relaxa? Tomando banho. Àgua,àgua. Taking a bath. Water, water.

What is your favorite memory of when your children were babies?

Qual é a sua recordação favorita de quando seus filhos eram bebês? A alegria da minha filha. The happiness of my daughter.

What is your favorite word? Least favorite word?

Qual é a sua palavra favorita? E a menos favorita? Fé. Injustiça. Faith. Injustice.

What is your favorite sound? Least favorite sound?

Qual é o seu som favorito? E o menos favorito? Musica brasileira, blues, musica eletrônica, moda de viola e algumas musicas gospel. Pagode, funk e semelhantes. Brazilian music, blues, electronic music, mandolin sounds and some gospel music. “Pagode”, funk and similar trends.

Do you have a bedtime routine?

Você tem uma rotina de dormir? Não. No.

What is your favorite book to read to your child?

Qual é o seu livro favorito para ler para seu filho? A biblia com desenhos. The bible with illustrations.

How did you come up with your children’s names?

Como você escolheu os nomes de seus filhos? Eu tinha lista grande. Mas ate minha filha restavam duvidas. Os familiares e o pai da criança fizeram  campanha contra. Então coloquei Virginia imaginado que apelido poderia ser Nina que na verdade era o nome escolhido. Mas não pegou todos chamavam ela de Guga. I had a long list. But until my daughter was born, I had doubts. Family and my daughter’s father mounted a big campaign against the name I chose. So I named her Virginia hoping that the nickname would be Nina, which was the name I had chosen. But it did not stick and everybody ended up calling her Guga.

As a mom, what is one thing you couldn’t possibly live without?

Como uma mãe, qual é uma coisa sem a qual você não poderia viver? Ver e falar com minha filha. To see and talk to my daughter.

What do you do to encourage healthy habits in your family?

O que você faz para incentivar hábitos saudáveis em sua família? Tento avaliar se é uma boa idéia. Se eu achar benéfico. Se eu acreditar, converso falo com as pessoas ao meu redor sobre ela, tento “vender” a idéia e então incorporar a nossa vida. I try to evaluate if they’re a good idea. If they’re beneficial. If I think they are, I try to talk to those around me and “sell” them on the idea, and then incorporate it in our lives.

What is most important for your family to do together?

O que é mais importante para sua família fazer juntos? Estar junto! Conversar, rir e também refletir juntos. Be together! Chat, laugh and reflect together as well.

If you were famous, what would you be famous for?

Se você fosse famosa, o que você seria? Gostaria de ser por algo que trouxesse ajuda na vida das pessoas. I’d like to be for something that helps people in their lives.

What advice do you have for new parents?

Que conselho você daria para os novos pais? Aproveitem a infância dos seus filhos, pois passa rápido. Esteja com eles sempre que possível e na medida do dia a dia com carinho, amor e limites. Os pais e filhos irão agradecer no futuro. Não deixem de encaminhar sua vida particular e vida de casal. Separe tempo especial para isto. Enjoy the childhood of your kids, because it goes by fast. Spend time with them whenever possible every day with care, love and limits. Parents and children will be thankful for it in the future. Don’t forget to manage your personal life as well as that as a couple. Set time aside for that.
