Mama Moderne is proud to introduce The MM Interview series. To start things off right we’re pleased to feature an incredible woman, friend and entrepreneur. Bethany is the mother of five beautiful children, the author of ‘Chocolate Covered Friendship’ and owner of The Cocoa Tree, a premier chocolate shop in Nashville’s historic Germantown.
What is the most rewarding part of being a mom?
I enjoy watching each of my children develop creatively and spiritually. They are all at different stages in life, so to watch my baby girl pick up a crayon and start scribbling is very rewarding because I can think back eleven years to when my brilliantly creative teenage daughter was “just scribbling” and see so much more on that piece of paper than just scratches of color – it is the beginning of a creative journey that I will enjoy watching my entire life.
I believe that as they learn to connect to that creative channel, they will learn to connect intimately with the one who gave them their unique abilities and perspectives, that is the spiritual side that I love to see growing within them. God’s beauty is marvelous when found in nature, but the feeling you get when your eye captures the colors of a sunset can’t compare to the feeling of God moving inside you, inspiring words, colors, musical phrases and brushstrokes to be born.
What is the hardest part of being a mom?
Hearing “mom” 25 times a day from five different children! It is a very demanding job.
When did you first consider yourself grown up?
When I noticed myself saying things to my kids that my parents had said to me, over and over.
How do you stay true to yourself as a woman?
I listen to advice from my friends, but at decision time, I have learned to listen to that still, small voice inside me.
How do you juggle work and motherhood?
I work as hard as I can at both, but I make sure I remember that the important events at work, no matter how significant, are not as important as being at the kindergarten play, making cupcakes for a birthday, watching a Charlie Brown Christmas or playing in the first snow of the season. You can’t ever get those moments back.
How do you destress and relax?
Quiet time, alone…
What is your favorite word? Least favorite word?
Mommy and mommy!
What is your favorite sound? Least favorite sound?
Giggling and screaming!
As a mom, what is one thing you couldn’t possibly live without?
Hugs and kisses.
What do you do to encourage healthy habits in your family?
I practice what I preach as often as I can.
What is most important for your family to do together?
Dinner around the table. Nothing is more important than that.
If you were famous, what would you be famous for?
What advice do you have for new parents?
Pray without ceasing, laugh more than you cry, play as hard as you can, listen with understanding, love unconditionally… and don’t forget to breathe.
